South Road Upgrade
Improving traffic flow and enhancing safety for all road users
Project Overview
This project will improve five key intersections along South Road between Warrigal Road and Nepean Highway. This 4.4-kilometer stretch already accommodates approximately 40,000 vehicles each day. Upgrading these intersections will improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks that road users currently face. The existing off-road bike path along Nepean Highway between South Road and Cummins Road will also be upgraded enhancing overall safety and user experience for all road users.
The works include an additional right-lanes to improve access to both Nepean Hwy, and an East Boundary Rd modification of existing intersections, installing signalised pedestrian traffic lights. Works at Nepean Highway and Taylor / Jasper intersections have been completed with balance of works due by the end of 2022.
The Victorian Government is funding this project, which is part of the Major Roads Projects under Victoria's Big Build. The project was announced in November 2018, and construction commenced in 2021. The upgrade is due to be completed early 2023.
